The Nutley Board of
Commissioners proclaimed Saturday as Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day, in honor
of Lincoln School fourth-grader Willem Wuebben, who mainstreamed into the
third-grade last year.
"You're my hero
today," Revenue and Finance Commissioner Thomas Evans said during
Tuesday's meeting. Mayor and Public Safety Commissioner Alphonse Petracco
congratulated Wuebben on his "fantastic" accomplishments.
The A student was
diagnosed with Moebius Syndrome at the age of 1. Moebius is characterized by
facial paralysis and other neurological problems including visual impairments,
sensory integration dysfunctions, sleep disorders and weak muscle tones.
Willem read a poem and
handed out pencils to the commissioners.
His father Michael
said that his son's greatest attribute is compassion. "No matter what he's
feeling, he's always worrying about others," he said.
